The need: Parts go into a bath and some areas must stay bare. You need a tape that survives the chemistry, keeps a sharp edge and peels off in one piece afterwards.
Pick the tape by the chemistry of the bath, not by the word "chemical-resistant". Acid, alkali and salt fog attack an adhesive in different ways, which is why we run them as three separate grades rather than one all-purpose tape.
Acid (plating, pickling, PCB etch) attacks the adhesive at the edge and creeps under it. Alkali (degreasing, e-coat, anodizing pre-treatment) softens the backing itself. Salt fog (ASTM B117 chambers, marine service) is a long, wet, low-concentration exposure — days, not minutes — so what fails there is usually adhesion, not the film.
