The need: Your tape lifts, slides or lets go on a surface that has oil on it — engine bay, gearbox, machine tool or a coolant-flooded line.
Ordinary tape does not fail in oil because the adhesive is weak — it fails because oil migrates between the adhesive and the surface and breaks the bond from underneath. An oil-resistant grade is formulated so the adhesive does not swell or soften when that happens.
Two different problems get called the same thing. Oil mist (engine and transmission bays) is a thin film that arrives after the tape is applied — the bond has to survive contamination. Direct contact (hydraulic lines, cutting coolant) means the tape is wet with fluid the whole time, so the backing must not swell either.
